We can imagine this is how amateur radio looked 100 years ago. 

All gear was homemade back then. No Japanese or Chinese transceivers!  Real experimenters.

Evil - NOT amateur radio

One thing history teaches us - we never learn from history!  

Shortly after WW1 we were fighting in WW2. At the moment, there are 2 major conflicts in the world. All these conflicts have their roots in injustice. It pains me that humans seem incapable of living peacefully with others. Inevitably this hate boils over.

Sadly, I have come to the conclusion that human beings are evil. At one time, I thought we were all good at heart. Recent events make me doubt this.

My interest in radio goes back to 1961. Since then, it was my career and an absorbing hobby. 

After all this time I still find aspects of our hobby totally fascinating. 

Most recently, I have ordered a 2W 23cm transverter from Bulgaria that I hope to use to work some locals and maybe further in the UKAC sessions when portable.

At G3XBM

In all, I have been in the hobby since the early 1960s. It is not possible to do everything, but I have tried quite a bit over the years. Normally I use QRP powers. Using high power, and big beams would certainly make some things easier, but for me the fun is seeing how far low power and simple antennas get. Each to their own. Thank goodness we are all different.

Amateur radio means different things to different people. Some just like chatting, some ATV, others repeaters, others satellites, others QRP, others moonbounce and so on.

Me - a VERY long time ago!

Since my cerebellum brain bleed nearly 2 years ago, I have managed very little experimental work such as fieldwork and building. At one time (and I hope again in the not too distant future) these aspects of the hobby gave me the most pleasure and fun.

Amateur radio history DVD?

The ARRL has produced a DVD recently on the history of amateur radio in the USA over the last 50-60 years. See http://www.arrl.org/shop/The-ARRL-Film-Collection/ .  I wonder how much material exists on old film and video in the UK/Europe and whether there would be enough to make a DVD on the history of amateur radio on this side of the pond?

As I mentioned a few years ago, there was (once) a 78rpm sound disc made by G5UM of the last night of UK operation on the old 56MHz band back in the 1940s, but this appears to have been lost. Although there have been several books on the early history it would be wonderful to find and collate old film material on amateur radio in Europe.
