For many weeks no-one had heard any news of GM4SLV. After hearing nothing I rang his home in the Shetlands this evening (fearing the worst) and I was so pleased to hear his voice. John is taking a break from the hobby, but all is well. So the message is "don't panic Captain Manwaring". He is fine.

Shetland on 472kHz WSPR - both ways
Using the very indifferent 2m/70cm feeder antenna (some of this is on the ground) last night I was pleased to exchange WSPR spots with GM4SLV (896km) up in the Shetland Isles as well as being spotted by M0EMM (192km) and G8HUH (250km) in Somerset.
This was my first outing in MF for many months. In coming evenings I'll try different antennas: none are dedicated 472kHz antennas - all are compromise antennas, usually strapped feeders with a base loading coil.
GM4SLV must have a very quiet RX location as he misses very little and my signal would have been very weak.

Vertical loop success on 500kHz QRP
This evening I've been WSPRing on 500kHz running about 2mW ERP from my thin vertical wire loop with an area of around 70 sq metres. The bottom of the loop just runs along the ground and at the moment is buried in the long wet grass! Despite this, my signal is being decoded in G, ON, PA and GM with best DX tonight 896km to GM4SLV up in the Shetland Is.

Top Band WSPR
This evening I moved from 500kHz to 160m to see if I could improve my WSPR DX on topband. At first try, GM4SLV heard me up in the Shetlands. As for 500kHz, my ERP will be considerably lower as I am only using a short 5m long vertical tuned with a ferrite rod ATU. See John's screenshot, that also shows some digital QRM on the same frequency. At 2116z John was copying me on 160m when I was running just 100mW from the TX.

Even greater DX on 500kHz QRPp WSPR - 896kms!
This is getting unbelievable now with such low power and a simple antenna: having just got a report from OR7T I've just now got one at -26dB S/N from GM4SLV in the Shetland Is all of 896kms away! This has been one of the best days ever in my ham radio life.
