G4ILO blog
Although Julian has been a SK for many years, his blog is still in place. Even now, all these years later, I still get visitors via his site. His death saddened many of us and his blog is a fine reminder of a fine person, greatly missed.

Julian G4ILO's blog
Julian died 5 years ago from a brain tumour. He was a great amateur who was well liked. Even now, I still get people coming here having read his blog! His blog is still there and it is a fitting tribute to a brave man.

Julian G4ILO
Although a SK for several years now, I still get people coming to this blog via Julian's site. This is a fitting tribute to his memory. Although we never met "on the air", I considered him a good friend. Like many, I followed his struggle to the end. RIP. You are not forgotten.

G4ILO referrals
Although Julian died some time ago his blog, and inspiration, live on. To this day, I still get people coming here having first been to Julian's blog.
If you don't know G4ILO's story, he battled with an incurable brain tumour for some time, living longer than expected. Sadly, it got him in the end. RIP.

Julian G4ILO has died, sadly
From Julian's blog:
We all knew this was likely but it saddens me greatly to report this here.
RIP Julian - you brightened our lives and we will all miss you. Olga, our sympathies to you in your great loss. Julian inspired a great many people. He will be remembered for a long time.
I have no details of memorials (flowers, donations, etc.) or funeral arrangements.
Julian died yesterday on 24 October in the presence of his wife Olga and two Hospice nurses at home at 19-45 peacefully and painlessly. He will be always loved and always remembered.See http://onefootingrave.blogspot.co.uk/ .

Julian - G4ILO?
Just wondering if anyone has news on Julian?
It is nearly 1 month since his " One foot in the grave" blog was last updated and his health seemed to be failing back then. I have emailed Julian, but had no response from Julian or XYL Olga yet. Julian has been fighting a brain cancer for a couple of years. I hope he is still fighting it.
UPDATE 1431z: See https://twitter.com/g4ilo/status/466514524707643392/photo/1 . I hope Julian enjoys using the new radio. Good news.

PSK31 mode
Julian G4ILO mentions his enjoyment of PSK31 on HF on his blog today. Although I've had a fair few QSOs and some good DX with this mode over the years, I'm not a great fan of it.
Although Julian rightly says it is a very good mode that well complements CW and SSB, and it is certainly true that the PSK31 part of the bands are often busy when CW and SSB signals are absent, to me QSOs feel too formalised with exchanges that follow fairly standard formulae. Too often it feels like a PC talking to a PC. Maybe I should try next time to avoid using these pre-programmed messages and go for a normal free-form keyboard "chat" instead.
It's a while since I've tried PSK31 on HF. Maybe next week when the grandchildren go home I'll give it another go.
The ARRL reports that Varicode, as used in PSK31, has now been officially recognised by the ITU. See http://www.arrl.org/news/amateur-created-varicode-adopted-as-itu-recommendation .

G4ILO's brain tumour
Several readers of my blog also read Julian G4ILO's interesting blog. You may, or may not, be aware that Julian has recently been diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour known as Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade 4 and he is just about to start treatment to slow down its progress. A complete cure is unlikely but modern treatments can certainly help to slow the tumour growth. I'm sure you all join me in wishing Julian every success in beating this. Julian and his wife Olga have a new blog tracking his treatment progress called One Foot In the Grave which I commend to you.

DXing - realtime maps
This is a useful resource from VHFDX.net to track openings on 10m and upwards into the VHF bands. A mapping system that plots recently reported QSOs. Thanks to G4ILO for pointing this out to me.
