The place in the photo has been serving food since the 1200s. Luckily the cheese scones are not that old 😉😉.

Ely from the train - NOT amateur radio

The photo show Ely as the train from Norwich drew into the station earlier this week. Ely is dominated by its cathedral on the hill. The River Great Ouse (into which the River Cam flows) runs through it. hence all the boats!

Ely snack lunch

On Wednesday, we ate at the Almonry restaurant in Ely. This is next to Ely Cathedral and has been serving food since the 1200s - that is some time!! Thankfully, the food was fresh and not that old. It is hard to imagine who was eating here back in the 1200s. I guess it was an alms house back then, giving alms to the poor.

Ely - NOT amateur radio

We went to Ely earlier today. This included eating in the Almonry restaurant that has been serving food since the 1200s. The food is fresh (not from the 1200s!).

The collage is of Ely Cathedral.

Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

Ely is about 20 minutes away from us by car. The cathedral, which is very old, dominates.

Near Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

This house was next to Ely Cathedral. I think it is either a cathedral office or linked to the King's School.

Lunch companion - NOT amateur radio

This morning we went to Ely Cathedral and had lunch in the Almonry that dates back to the 13th century. Imagine eating here then!

We had a companion for lunch: a robin that came to our table and, at times, was just a few inches away. I am sure it would have eaten out of my hand given more time. As it was, it had some of my wife's cheese scone when she was not looking!

Ely cathedral - NOT amateur radio

Ely is about 8 miles away "as the crow flies". It is about 12 miles away by road. On top of the hill is the magnificent cathedral that may be seen, like Chartres in France, from miles way.

At one time, it was surrounded by marshy land hence the name "Isle of Ely".

Ely yesterday - NOT amateur radio

This was Ely yesterday by the River Great Ouse.  Ely is a nice place with a cathedral on the hill and an attractive waterfront. The railway station seems always to be busy.

Peacocks in Ely - NOT amateur radio

This was where we had lunch today: Peacocks in Ely, Cambs.. It is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays. We tried to take a friend there on a Tuesday, but found it closed!

The Almonry, Ely - NOT amateur radio

This is the cathedral cafe. They've been serving food here since the 1200s.

Thankfully the cheese scones are not that old!

The undercroft has vaulted ceilings and looks very, very old!

Ely cathedral - NOT amateur radio

Ely Cathedral today. Just how did they make this in medieval times without modern tools?

Ely Cathedral in the mist - NOT amateur radio

You can see why they call this "the ship of the fens". This photo was on social media recently.

Apparently there are hardly any foundations. Remember, there were no JCBs when this was made in medieval times. It is the only medieval wonder of the world in the UK I think.

Ely cathedral is built on high ground above what was once marshy ground. Hence the name "isle of Ely".

Norwich train - NOT amateur radio

Last week, we went to Norwich by train from Ely.  Ely station is always busy. I guess this is because many lines converge here.

Approaching Ely - NOT amateur radio

Yesterday we got the train back to Ely. This was the view through the train window showing the cathedral and boats.

Ely is a surprisingly busy station where many lines meet. It is rare to not see something going on there.

Crimean Cannon - NOT amateur radio

This cannon outside Ely Cathedral was a gift to Ely after the Crimean War from Queen Victoria.

It is a Russian cannon draped in the Ukrainian flag at the moment.

Note the colour of the grass! We had a shower this afternoon.

Costume exhibition - NOT amateur radio

I stayed outside, but my wife went in to the Lady Chapel at Ely Cathedral to see the costumes on display. This is not my scene!

They have a display of all sorts of costumes from films and TV. If this excites you, I am sure this would be of interest. Free with cathedral entry. As locals, we get free cathedral entry.

These were seen in nearby Ely earlier in the week.

Ely cathedral - NOT amateur radio

They call this "the ship of the fens" and you can see why. It can be seen from miles away standing high on the Isle of Ely. There has been a church here for well over 1000 years.

It is the only medieval wonder in England. It truly is a splendid piece of architecture, built way before our times with lots of tools and machines.
