Church roofs - NOT amateur radio

A few days ago we were in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. These were some of the magnificent church roofs we saw.

With my brother - NOT amateur radio

Although we message daily on WhatsApp, we see each other face-to-face a few times a year if we are lucky.  He lives in Devon and I am in Cambridgeshire.

Yesterday, we visited Bury-St-Edmunds. The photo is of us in the Abbey Gardens, with the ruined abbey behind.

Bury St Edmunds

This is a delightful market town in Suffolk. Unlike Cambridge where many people are foreign visitors, most in Bury St Edmunds seem to be East Anglian,   The old abbey was sacked centuries ago. The photo shows a view of the cathedral from the Abbey Gardens.

Bury St Edmunds Abbey - NOT amateur radio

Until King Henry VIII, this was one of the largest abbeys in England. Then it was dissolved by the King. Today, all that remains are the ruins.  Sacrilege.

St Edmundsbury Cathedral, Bury St Edmunds, UK - NOT amateur radio

The abbey here is centuries old (it is now in ruins), but the cathedral was only quite recently finished.

We visited the Abbey Gardens earlier today.

The photo shows the cathedral.

Tame Robin - NOT amateur radio

When we were in the Abbey Gardens at Bury St Edmunds, we had a very friendly robin nearby.  If I had had some food, I am sure it would have taken it from my hand.

As always, the Abbey Gardens looked a picture.

As our car was in for a service and MOT, we went on the bus to Bury St Edmunds, about 17 miles away.

It was a great, free (with our bus passes) trip with an excellent tapas lunch. It was a good trip out. On the way there we sat at the top front so we had a very good view. You can see so much more from the top of a double decker bus.

Abbey Gardens - NOT amateur radio

These gardens in nearby Bury St Edmunds are often a riot of colour, as they were recently. We often go there whilst shopping in Bury St Edmunds that is a charming East Anglian town.

Almost normal - NOT amateur radio

Yesterday we went to Bury St Edmunds as an earlier post shows. It felt almost normal, which was good to see.

Bury St Edmunds is a delightful place. If you live in the UK and have never been, I thoroughly recommend it.

Bury St Edmunds - NOT amateur radio

Bury St Edmunds has a fine market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Often fruit and vegetables are as good as in the supermarkets and far cheaper.

There is a small museum in the market square (at the back of the photo) called Moyses Hall in what is, I think, the oldest building there.

Friends - NOT amateur radio

On the bridge over
the River Lark
For the last couple of nights we had an old school friend of my wife and her husband staying. They were on their way to a holiday in Norfolk.

They are very good company and we really enjoyed them staying.

Yesterday, we took them to Bury St Edmunds, which is a delightful East Anglian place with an old (and new!) abbey.

Bury St Edmunds earlier - NOT amateur radio

Earlier today, we went to Bury St Edmunds with 2 of our grandchildren. It was market day. Bury St Edmunds still has a very old fashioned East Anglian feel. Unlike Cambridge it is not filled with Far Eastern visitors with their selfie sticks. It feels "authentic".

The photo shows my wife with 2 of our 4 grandchildren.

Bury St Edmunds market - NOT amateur radio

We love shopping in this old Suffolk market town, especially the market that has some real bargains. At the moment it has a bit of a Christmas theme!

Market fruit and veg - NOT amateur radio

Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. Market Day and lots of fresh fruit and veg on sale. Excellent. Bury is an "old fashioned" sort of place, but excellent for shopping. Great market still with some great bargains e.g. 3 magazines for £2.50 on one stall and they are only a few weeks old too.

Bury St Edmunds - NOT amateur radio

Bury St Edmunds is our favourite place to shop. It is a bit further than Cambridge but easier to get to. It is a classic Suffolk market town with charming shops and a good market twice a week. Most of the people you see are true locals from the area with Suffolk accents. In Cambridge it seems that a good proportion of the people are from China!

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bury_St_Edmunds .

Spot the PW?

Have you noticed how few radio magazines there are nowadays on the shelves of magazine shops?  The photo shows part of the magazine racks in W.H.Smith's in Bury St Edmunds. There are lots of mags on trains and transport, quite a few on PCs and smart phones, but it took me ages to find any mags on radio. It is as if our hobby no longer exists.

Out of interest, Practical Wireless was eventually found! Can you spot it?
