Until this was mentioned on Southgate News I was unaware of this app. Apparently you can use an Android device to connect into D-star networks using some software called "Peanut". This may be useful to some, especially if your nearest D-star repeater is out of range. You can also use Peanut on a Windows machine with an Android emulator.

GPS and Anglesey Abbey - NOT amateur radio
Until yesterday, I had not tried my Android tablet (not a phone, just wi-fi) to plot my routes using GPS.
Yesterday, I put my tablet in my pocket as I walked to and from the bakers in the village. It plotted my path perfectly.
Later, I tried it in the car going to Anglesey Abbey some 5 miles away. The plot looks very accurate. I must try it again. I was surprised how well it did in the car.

PTT with cellular network radio
It had to come.
Southgate News has details of a mobile radio using cellular radio as its bearer. It uses Android and can link with things like Echolink for radio amateurs. The "radio" is sold by Moonraker.

Android WSPR beacon
To say I am a WSPR fan is an understatement! Nothing compares with the ability to span the globe with QRP, perhaps excepting OPERA. I see there is a WSPR app (Android) which allows a tablet to be hooked up to a rig to form a WSPR beacon. The app costs £1.58.

WSPR on an Android or iOS tablet?
A version of WSPR that would run on my iPod Touch 4g or even a version that would run on an Android platform would be a very desirable app. Although there is at least one app for WSPR, this is just a way of looking at the on-line database and not a version of the actual WSPR beaconing software.
I asked this before (back in March), but does anyone know if such a WSPR beaconing app is likely soon, if ever? Not being a software guru, I've no idea how difficult this would be, but can see a lot of demand for such an app.

Android and iPod WSPR
WSPR on the iPod Touch 4g |
If anyone knows if this has/is being done please let me know. I am aware of WSPR watch but this is NOT a WSPR terminal, just a neat reporting app. The picture shows what WSPR might look like on such a device - I wish!
I wrote to Joe Taylor to find out if the creator of WSPR knew of any attempts. This was his reply:
"Hi Roger,
No such effort has been attempted, to my knowledge.
