Lightning is a very interesting subject, There was a construction article on building a valve lightning detector that drove a chart recorder.
Years ago me and G4FJB decided to feed 300 foot of wire in to an 5KV electrostatic voltmeter at the works QTH that was located on the fifth floor. Watching very small deflections getting larger as the storm approached.
