Mini-whip E-field probe

There is little doubt that I shall have to try one of these on LF and MF and possibly other bands next autumn. I have the time from now until then to find the best spot to mount one. I may buy one from PA0RDT, although I have had success in the past with my own.

Hi Roger,
I use one of these on 136 and 475khz and find I get more spots on WSPR than any long wire or loop/frame antenna. I really don’t understand why this tiny antenna works so well. Any idea of the theory behind it?

Also, why is it not possible to create a transmit version?

I read your blog everyday and sorry to read your recovery is taking so long. You must get extremely frustrated with all your projects you have on permanent hold.
My offer to build you a U3S QRP labs beacon is still on should you want something new to experiment with.

Basically they work on S/N. As the antenna gets smaller so does the noise picked up. This works when external noise dominates as it does on LF and MF. The overall S/N is still good.

As to my recovery, I think how I am is how I am going to be i.e. giddy on my feet and tiring quickly. 30 minutes of physical or mental activity leaves me exhausted. At least I can drive and generally I am not disabled. As you can tell, I still enjoy amateur radio!
