Another amazing photo - NOT amateur radio

What I really enjoy about 365project (no affiliation at all with Microsoft) is seeing the variety of photos from all over the world. Some use it as a visual diary, others as a way to be creative. It is absolutely free, although ace membership (paid for) offers some privileges.

This amazing cloudscape was posted a few days ago by a friend.

Interesting clouds - NOT amateur radio

This photo was recently posted by a friend in Shetland on 365project. I think these clouds are very high and the colours are ice crystals reflecting the low sun.

Odd clouds - NOT amateur radio

These odd clouds appeared as a FaceBook memory from 2019. I was wondering if they were fribratus clouds? Let me know what you think. I cannot remember what the day was like.

This was "our" windmill seen out the window.

See https://whatsthiscloud.com/cloud-species/fibratus/ .

Lenticular clouds? - NOT amateur radio

Returning home a few hours ago I spotted what seemed to be lenticular clouds below the normal rain clouds. Lenticular clouds are usually associated with mountains.

In the past I have seen them (Yorkshire Dales and Portugal), but never around here where even small hills are rare!

The photo I took hardly did justice to what I saw. If not lenticular clouds, they looked very similar. I am no cloud expert, so am happy to be told what they were. Weather was about 7 degrees C and dry.

Interesting clouds - NOT amateur radio

When it comes to clouds I am definitely no expert!  Last evening, at about 2030z, there were some interesting clouds over "our" windmill next door, so I took a quick photo out of the lounge window. I think they are fibratus clouds, which are a form of cirrus, but as I said, I am no expert!

Cold Arctic

See http://www.spaceweather.com/ .

The Space Weather website has some great images of stratospheric polar clouds saying the Arctic Circle is getting very cold.

Mesospheric clouds (higher than the stratosphere) are often associated with 6m DX from Europe to Japan. I don't know if such propagation is possible at this time of year. These openings are usually in late June, I think.

I don't know if stratospheric clouds reflect radio waves as do mesospheric clouds.

See https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/sunearth/science/atmosphere-layers2.html for details of atmospheric layers.

Lenticular (lee wave) clouds

The last few days I've been in the Yorkshire Dales area of the UK and was treated to a sight I'd not seen before - lenticular cloud formations over the tops of the higher hills in the Dales. These are sometimes called flying saucer clouds as this is just what they look like. These were all seen yesterday June 24th in the late morning. I only managed to photograph one (a poor example) as I was being driven and was unable to stop when the very best examples (really like flying saucers with nice sharp edges) were visible. A few hours later these had all disappeared. I expect these are quite common in areas like the Dales, but this was the first time I'd seen them.
