Solar forecast

Of late, we have had pretty poor conditions, suggesting we are very close to solar minimum. As I mentioned before, there is some divergence of views about the exact date of the sunspot minimum. One forecast was suggesting we had already passed this, whereas another was suggesting we are not quite there yet. At the moment, it feels like we are very close to sunspot minimum. My favourite forecast is usually updated early in the month, so it will be interesting to see if their dates for solar minimum have changed.

ARE we at the solar minimum?

Opinions vary.

In the last few weeks we have seen a few sunspots (now gone out of view again), but as they say, "one swallow does not make a summer". Indeed, it could be the year-end before we know if this was just a blip or the start of an upward trend. Last month was dire.

Solar minimum

The solar numbers for February 2019 do not look very good. Although some are still predicting the minimum is over, I have my doubts. Certainly 10m FT8 is very quiet here most days with just G spots. I hope I am proved wrong.

Solar cycle 25

It is a while since I saw the very latest news of the forecasts for the next peak and when the climb to it is likely to begin. We are very clearly at solar minimum.

Some forecasts were suggesting the end of the minimum as late as February 2019. It may already have passed or it could last all next year.
