OPERA - new weak signal beaconing mode

There is a new very weak signal beaconing mode being trialled currently on 136 and 500kHz called OPERA. The current version is available as a zip download at http://www.mediafire.com/?w74a061m48nv806 but this is a beta version and updates are happening quite fast at the moment, so best check the RSGB's LF reflector for the most recent version from Graham G4WGT.

Initial indications are this is even better than WSPR, which as we all know is an excellent QRP beaconing mode. I managed to decode SM6BHZ (just under 1000km) and PA0A tonight when using just my 20m separated earth electrodes (no antenna in the air here at all) on 136kHz.

Over the weekend I may give this a go with a few mW ERP on 500kHz and, when I get my vertical loop re-erected, on 136kHz too.

Early days yet, but a most interesting mode that does NOT need critical PC timing (unlike WSPR) and that can use the PTT line or VOX control to key the TX i.e. it is simple to interface rig to PC.

Netherlands on 500kHz and 70MHz

Some good news: amateurs in The Netherlands now have access to the 500kHz band (again) and 70-70.5MHz (4m).  Countries permitting 4m operation are growing every few months. Let's hope one of the major equipment manufacturers includes the band in multimode HF-6m rigs. Adding 4m cannot be too hard.

A good night on 500kHz WSPR

Not bad for 2mW ERP on 500kHz and a smallish wire loop antenna!
Very good activity levels again this evening on 500kHz WSPR with 13 unique stations reporting my signal in 6 countries. Best DX report was from OH1LSQ at 1733km, the first time this season.

I really must make an effort to get the 137kHz WSPR activity stirring. Maybe if I can get my ERP up this next week I'll swap over to that band for a few nights and see what turns up. Mind you, the WSPR activity on 137kHz is very low currently with most people using QRSS beaconing.

500kHz WSPR

Yesterday I fired up the 500kHz WSPR kit (2mW ERP from the loop antenna) for the first time in several months and was pleased with the reports and level of activity. Several people joined in the fun and some new stations are now monitoring and reporting on the band. I want to get my 137kHz WSPR kit sorted this week with around 25W RF and maybe 0.5mW ERP if I am lucky.

A decent 500kHz allocation a step nearer?

"On the IARU Region 1 website Colin Thomas, G3PSM, reports on progress in Mainz towards an Amateur Radio allocation in the vicinity of 500 kHz.

WRC12 Agenda Item 1.23 says "To consider an allocation of about 15 kHz in parts of the band 415-526.5 kHz to the amateur service on a secondary basis, taking into account the need to protect existing services;"

The CEPT Conference Preparatory Group Project Team C (CPG PT C) meeting took place in Mainz, Germany and Colin Thomas, G3PSM, reports:

At its meeting between 26 and 29 September, 2011 the CEPT project team approved a draft ECP for an 8kHz-wide band between 472 and 480kHz. This draft ECP now goes to CEPT's Conference Preparatory Group for formal ratification in November. This breakthrough, at the 11th and final meeting of the project team, occurred with the submission by the UK's Ofcom of an RSGB-drafted compromise ECP proposal supported by France and Sweden. But the prospect of an agreed CEPT position is good progress, representing a 48 country block vote going into next year's WRC-12. It needs to be noted that the draft ECP comes with significant caveats to avoid interference to the primary user, as well as the existing secondary user services. These are the maritime and aeronautical radionavigation services respectively. As secondary users we would also not be afforded any protection. It should be acknowledged that we have had support from a number of Region 1 national societies in getting to this position."

137/500kHz ERP improvements

Today I made a start on improving my ERP on 137kHz and 500kHz.

Firstly, I've bought a pile of Wima 1000V polypropylene capacitors from Farnell. With these I have now made a new ATU to match my TX loop (breadboard only ATU so far) which will allow me to run some 6-10dB more power into the loop without the ATU components overheating and failing. My old switched capacitor array was an old school capacitance decade box and this was marginal with tuning changing as caps heated up!

Secondly, I am going to change the MOSFET PA design to increase the 137kHz power from around 7W RF to about 30W. This should be worth around 6-8dB. I plan to do something similar on 500kHz too.

Finally, I've got some more wire to allow me to double the thickness of my TX loop. This will be done later and will be worth 2-3dB as long as I alter the 3C90 ATU (step down) matching transformer.

In all, these changes will give me up to 10-13dB more ERP and, with some luck will allow me to get more reports on QRSS and WSPR. It will take some weeks to implement these, but by late October my range should improve on both bands.

Back on 500kHz WSPR

This afternoon John GM4SLV informed me he was restarting tests on 500kHz WSPR from way up in the Shetland Islands with about 150mW ERP.  So, I've fired up my own 500kHz WSPR system in the hope of copying him later this evening. So far I have had spots of my own 1mW ERP signal from several stations with best DX so far being PA3ABK at 306km, but nothing seen (yet) from John. I'm hoping a few more stations will appear too.

500kHz

With the autumn season not too far off I am turning my thoughts to 500kHz and 136kHz again. This weekend I hope to return to 500kHz WSPR as GM4SLV is testing his new 500kHz antenna and ATU. After that it will be my turn to improve the ERP on 136kHz with a new PA, ATU and antenna.

500kHz WSPR - a good evening

A decent set of reports this evening with my 1mW ERP WSPR beacon on 500kHz. Best DX DF4PV's report at 597km. Also I copied Gerhard DI2AF's WSPR beacon (just over 800km) higher up the band on 505.13kHz.

Iceland get big 500kHz allocation

493-510 kHz has been granted on a secondary basis to amateurs in Iceland with a power limit of 100W. In addition, 60m and 4m allocations have also been confirmed.

Dutch hams lose 500kHz (for now)

Stations in The Netherlands who were active on 500kHz will have to stop transmitting at the end of 2010 as their permits have yet to be renewed. It is expected that this will happen within 4-6 weeks.

500kHz WSPR with earth electrodes

This evening I tried WSPR on 500kHz again using the earth electrode "antenna". 4 different stations reported hearing my sub 1mW ERP signal with best DX 417km to PA0A. Tomorrow I may try 500kHz with the vertical antenna to see how it compares, although I have to rebuild the ATU first.

6 Spanish stations get access to 501-504kHz

The Spanish authorities have granted limited access to 501-504kHz (100Hz bandwidth, 5W) to 6 stations (EA1AY,  EA2HB,  EA3CC,  EA3WX,   EA4BVZ, and  EA5DY) until the end of May 2011,

500kHz interference

In the last few days several stations across Western Europe have noticed a strong wideband signal that is severely impacting reception between 498-502kHz. This appears to be a NATO test transmission for a marine data system that may be introduced in the near future.

Another good night on 500kHz WSPR with several more reports from Finland (OH1LSQ) as well as a report from Norway (LA3EQ) and several from nearer countries. ERP still in the 1-2mW region from the loop antenna.

More DX reports on 500kHz

Log from early evening Oct 26th 2010 (500kHz QRPp WSPR)
This evening, the QRP 500kHz signal from the small vertical wire loop is doing well with reports again from Finland on WSPR. I still can't quite believe how a loop of thin wire with part of it sitting in the wet grass can work so well with so little power applied to it.

Vertical loop versus earth electrodes antenna

Just done an interesting test comparing my vertical wire loop with an earth electrode antenna. I removed the lower part of the loop and connected the ends to ground. Matching was totally different (low Q antenna) but the performance was only 5dB down on the loop, based on reports from 2 local and one DX station. A similar test on 136kHz as the only station on in range (M0BMU 69km) was unable to copy my signal on the earth electrode antenna suggesting at least 5dB down on that band too.

More 500kHz 2mW ERP DX reports this evening

This evening I switched back to 500kHz from 137kHz WSPR earlier in the day. Yet again good WSPR reports from GM4SLV and OH1LSQ (1733km) who received me as early as 1716z.

New DX record on 500kHz WSPR

This evening, quite unexpectedly, I got a string of reports on 500kHz from OH1LSQ in KP03sd at an astounding distance of 1733km. To me these are amazing reports pushing my best DX on the band with just a few milliwatts ERP to new levels.  What surprises me is how well a very simple wire loop works as a TX antenna: the wire is just 1mm diameter, with a loop area of around 70m square with part of the loop on the ground buried in wet grass. I now believe almost anything is possible!

Vertical loop success on 500kHz QRP

This evening I've been WSPRing on 500kHz running about 2mW ERP from my thin vertical wire loop with an area of around 70 sq metres. The bottom of the loop just runs along the ground and at the moment is buried in the long wet grass! Despite this, my signal is being decoded in G, ON, PA and GM with best DX tonight 896km to GM4SLV up in the Shetland Is.
