10m FT8 grabber

One of the things now possible on my new web pages is embedding. This has allowed me to add a grabber, so you can see what I am doing on PSKreporter maps. I think you can change the menus. Certainly I can. At the time of writing, I am looking at the last few hours on 10m FT8 RX.

See https://sites.google.com/view/g3xbm4/home/hf-mf-and-lf/10m-ft8-grabber .

Breakfast? - NOT amateur radio

This has appeared on social media several times.

As much as I like the occasional fry-up, even I would struggle!

Some would be very much against this.

Ivermectin - NOT amateur radio

Ivermectin seems to have anti-viral properties against Covid-19 in helping to prevent serious illness.

Some governments (Goa in India and Ireland) are recommending this very low cost drug as a prophylactic. I regularly watch the YouTube channel of Dr John Campbell and he is puzzled why this is not being widely recommended. He always gives the source of his data. I recommend you check this out.

Always seek the medical advice of your own doctor!

10m FT8 RX

For the last hour or so I have been on 10m FT8 RX with the tiny indoor loop. It is now 1210z and so far 92 stations have been spotted.

UPDATE 1327z:  120 stations spotted today so far on 10m FT8 RX.

UPDATE 1358z:  132 stations spotted today.

New website live

www.g3xbm.co.uk is now pointing to the new site. If there are any issues or you notice wrong pictures or errors, please let me know ASAP. For a while things may be wrong. Overall, things should be at least as good as the old site finally.

Cygnets - NOT amateur radio

This is the time of year when swans nest and have cygnets. They are at the mercy of foxes and similar predators. I doubt they will all survive. They look sweet but nature is cruel.

10m FT8 RX

For about 30 minutes I have been on 10m FT8 RX with the tiny indoor loop (see photo). So far today I have spotted 84 stations including a number in South America and the Caribbean.

You can see what I am spotting on PSKreporter.

As I mentioned earlier, I reckon this loop (the old Whizz Loop) is probably 10dB down on an external dipole. I hope to get a 10m dipole up this week, possibly with a 6m dipole too.

UPDATE 1914z:  185 stations spotted today on 10m FT8 RX.

77.5 GHz EME

This video was made in May 2013, but I have only just seen it. This is definitely pushing the boundaries. Makes my efforts seem distinctly average, HI.

Covid-19 humour - NOT amateur radio

Seen on social media earlier.

Vegetables - NOT amateur radio

This year, I am trying my hand at growing tomatoes and runner beans. This is an experiment as I am definitely not an expert!

It is probably cheaper to buy them at the nearest supermarket! The photo shows the runner beans just planted.  I have a few left over, so these needed putting in a suitable place.

Loops

My loop antenna works better than I expected. I stayed off 10m last year mostly as I did not have a suitable external antenna.

At the moment I am using an old Whizz Loop on 20m-10m. It is easy to tune and just sits on the shack windowsill. I have a better loop that I have used in the past on 10m (see photo).

My guess is the loop currently used is about 10dB down on a dipole. This is an estimate based on the stations I am not spotting. Nonetheless it works quite well for something so small with just a wire inductor about 50cms across. The "proper" 10m loop has a much thicker made of central heating pipe. It is far sharper, but harder to tune, but probably several dBs better.

What has surprised me is it the Whizz-Loop has even spanned the Atlantic several times with QRP FT8 on 17m.

I hope to get a 10m dipole up outside next week. I could make it cover 6m as well.

Pendulum swings - NOT amateur radio

 "What goes around comes around".

This is a phrase I know well. When I was at work people were always finding newer, better, ways to work. The only trouble was we tried these 30 years earlier!!

So it is with equality.

Let me say from the outset that I am all for equal opportunity. To me, it matters not whether your skin is black, white, red or purple. It does not matter whether you live in the worst slums in the world or the poshest house.  Gender does not matter. What gender your partner is doesn't matter.  Also, I do not agree with privilege as a result of who you are or the wealth you inherited. We all should have equal rights as human beings.

At the moment, we seem to seek equality, yet many are afraid to speak out in case they are labelled as politically incorrect.

We should work towards a fair society, but learn from the past.

Soccer: UK FA cup - NOT amateur radio

Although not a great football fan, I watched the FA cup yesterday between Chelsea and Leicester.  Leicester won the game 1:0. It was good to see them win. They surprised many a few years ago by topping the Premier League and have done pretty well this season.

HF conditions improving?

Stations spotted with the
loop on 10m FT8 yesterday
Quite late yesterday, I went on 10m FT8 RX using the tiny indoor loop antenna.

Despite this, 185 stations were spotted including many in South America. OK, this is NS and propagation is usually better than EW, but I get the feeling things on HF are improving.

Better equipped stations were spotting the southern USA on 10m FT8.

Sunspots - Sunday May 16th 2021

Website preview

This is a preview of my new webpages. I have not yet connected it to my main web address. I tried, but for some reason it did not work. Must be finger trouble. 😒

See https://sites.google.com/view/g3xbm4/home .

Any comments would be welcomed. Remember, use the sub-menus from "home" to navigate!

Some pages are incomplete or missing at the moment. I intend to correct these.

V2000 vertical omni antenna faulty

This antenna must be very old now. I have had it for a very long time and it would not surprise me if it was 20 years old.

Either it or the coax has failed as the VSWR has gone over 3:1.

I may try a whip  (with counterpoise) on the rig to see how much worse this is. Repairing the V2000 is a major issue these days.

Gardening yesterday - NOT amateur radio

Although it was dull here yesterday, it was mostly dry. We used it as a chance to put some bedding plants in.  These are "Busy Lizzies" waiting to go in holes I prepared earlier. Hopefully frosts are behind us now.

We bought the plants from a garden centre in the village that we chanced upon on one of our "lockdown" walks last spring. We ordered some plants from there last year and were very impressed with the plants and service.

"That's a very good question" - NOT amateur radio

Have you noticed this reply when people don't know how to answer? It is a favourite with politicians, although they rarely answer the questions!!

10m FT8 yesterday

All yesterday, when I was on TX, I was using 1W and sometimes 500mW to the tiny indoor loop antenna. 118 stations spotted me and I spotted 1072 stations. The map shows where I was spotted.

This is the inferior 10m loop which is probably 6dB worse than my other loop but easier to tune. The loop I used was probably 10dB down on an external dipole.

I could probably have had more spots, but I had to go to bed!

Most of this was Es.

10 years ago on 137kHz

Ten years ago I was copied in Holland on 137kHz despite running just 50uW ERP. At 328km, this was my best DX. I think this was with my large outside loop. The morse in QRSS says XBM XBM XBM.

Lonely tree - NOT amateur radio

This photo appeared on 365project yesterday.

Pity I didn't take it! It was taken by someone called Jan. I was very impressed.

365project is where you post a picture a day. It is totally free unless you want additional albums or privacy. I have done it for about 8 years.

Cycle 25 predictions

We are now on the up-slopes towards the solar peak of cycle 25. I have not seen very recent forecasts but this forecast suggested it looks as if it will be very similar to the last peak i.e. quite low.

See https://www.weather.gov/news/201509-solar-cycle .

10m FT8 QRP (Friday)

10m is wide open this morning with Es. I am told 6m is good too, It would not surprise me if Band 2 FM broadcast opens too. 2m? Probably too high.

I am on 10m FT8 RX at the moment after a brief period on QRP TX with 2.5W, then 1W, and the indoor tiny loop. 115 stations spotted on RX and 16 stations spotted me in my very brief TX period.

UPDATE 1028z:  255 stations spotted on 10m FT8 RX today and I have been spotted by 27 stations on TX, most with just 1W to the tiny indoor loop antenna. Probably going down to 500mW soon.

UPDATE 1055z: Now TXing with 500mW. 2 spots of my TX so far. 280 stations spotted so far on RX.

UPDATE 1222z:  338 stations spotted on 10m FT8 RX. Even with just 500mW TX I have been spotted by 4 stations.

UPDATE 1342z: 397 stations spotted on 10m FT8 RX with just the indoor tiny loop today. Fantastic Es conditions. Just a handful in Asia and Africa (probably Es).

UPDATE 1439z:  517 stations spotted today on 10m FT8 RX with the tiny indoor loop. This is definitely the best day yet this Es season. One was W1JR (5267km). This latter one was probably Es.

UPDATE 1520z: 568 stations so far spotted in 5 continents today on 10m FT8 RX with the tiny indoor loop on the shack windowsill and I have been spotted by 56 stations on TX. I have never used more than 1W and quite often 500mW today.

UPDATE 1840z:
887stations have been spotted today on 10m FT8 RX and 104 stations have spotted me on TX despite running 1W or less to the tiny indoor loop.

Felled tree - NOT amateur radio

This was seen at nearby Anglesey Abbey yesterday. The blue flowers are Forget Me Not.

More of where I come from in South Devon - NOT amateur radio

The photo shows where I come from in South Devon.

My brother plays golf nearby.

The South West Coastal Path runs through here.

Sunspots - Friday May 14th 2021

Solar flux is 75 and the sunspot number (SSN) 24.  A=7 and K=1.

Species? - NOT amateur radio

We saw these flowers earlier at Anglesey Abbey. I am not sure what these are.

Webcams - NOT amateur radio

There are vast numbers of webcams around the world allowing locked-down people to travel the world virtually. One of these is the webcam of the peregrine falcons at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, UK.

See https://www.elycathedral.org/welcome/peregrines-nesting-in-the-cathedral .

2m FT8 QRP (Thursday)

At the moment, I am on 2m FT8 QRP with 2.5W and the big-wheel omni antenna. It is now 1004z and I have spotted 3 stations on RX and I have been spotted by 7 stations with the furthermost GI6ATZ (479km) on TX.

See http://82.71.9.63:8080/cap/ for a local (to Cambridge) 2m FT8 grabber.

Stations spotting my
2m FT8 QRP to1256z today
UPDATE 1228z: 7 stations spotted on RX and 12 stations have spotted me on TX with the furthermost EI2FG (565km).

UPDATE 1256z:  Now my QRP has been spotted by 13 stations.

UPDATE 2040z: Practically all the spots this evening were G stations. This suggests most of the propagation was "flat band tropo" rather than scatter. Now QRT. I wonder if scatter is linked to no rain. Today was pretty wet.

Hackers? - NOT amateur radio

The number of visitors to this blog has jumped today.

I am not aware that my posts have suddenly attracted new people. I try to post things of interest, but I have already seen more visits today than I would normally see by teatime! I suspect, again, hackers are seeking soft targets. This happens quite often.

Exeter Rally postponed

The Exeter rally has been postponed until September 12th. Hopefully by then things will be more normal in the UK.

70cm FT8 yesterday

70cm FT8 has the potential to be a game changer.

For a long time I have suspected that scatter modes might be better on 70cm than on 2m.  Last night there was a sort of contest.

Last evening 29 stations were spotted in 6 countries (see map) with just a 2m (144MHz) big-wheel omni antenna. 2 of these were 479km away! Imagine what would have been possible with even a small beam.

If there was regular 70cm FT8 activity I think surprising distances would be worked at any time.

Devon - NOT amateur radio

The photo shows another view of where I come from in South Devon. For those that know it, Bowcombe Creek, near Kingsbridge.

This spot is good for birds.

Sunspots - Thursday May 13th 2021

70cm FT8 RX

I think there is a 70cm FT8 activity session this evening. So, I am on 70cm FT8 RX with the 2m big-wheel omni antenna.

UPDATE 1712z:  6 stations spotted so far.  Furthermost is ON7ZJ (302km) in Belgium.

UPDATE 1828z:  Now 16 stations spotted on RX with the furthermost DL5EBS (479km). Nobody has spotted my 1W on TX. I have had one QSO with G4NBS (22km). Now GI6ATZ (479km) spotted.

UPDATE 1856z:  20 stations in 6 countries spotted on 70cm FT8 RX this evening.

Stations spotted on 70cm
FT8 RX this evening
UPDATE 1954z:
26 stations spotted this evening on 70cm FT8 RX.

Am I being thick?

Before turning on my new webapages, I want to take a backup copy of my old pages. The old pages are in Google Classic Sites.

When I looked I could not see how to do this. I shall look again, but if you know how, please let me know.

UPDATE 1222z: I think you go to Classic sites and download to your Google drive as a zip file in "takeout". Haven't tried yet. This must have changed as I am sure this wasn't the case a few years ago.

UPDATE 1256z: I tried it. When I unzipped I could see the images but only some of the webpages! Now, this may just be me being thick, but.....  So far, I am still trying to find a way. All I really wanted to do was make a backup copy just in case.

New website - not quite ready

Last weekend I was hoping to "go live" on the revised web pages. There are still omissions and I want to find a way to have clearer schematics for those that want them.

My best estimate is in about a weeks' time.

See www.g3xbm.co.uk  . At the moment this still points to the old pages. I shall say when it is done on the blog.
