Sputnik QRPp Days

A reminder from Oleg has appeared in my inbox:

"Dear Space Friends,
tonight (October 4) at 00 UTC Sputnik QRPp Activity Days begin.
Over two weeks (before October 18) "Sputniks" (valves) and "Vanguards"
(pnp Ge transistors) will be sound "beep-beep-beep..." or "V V V...".
All  QSOs  are approved. SWLs must copy Sputniks or Vanguards QSOs or
CQs. See details on the Club 72 page - www.club72.su
I  welcome  all  operators  to  take  a  part and looking for photos,
schemes,  comments  daily.  All info will be published on the Club 72
page,  on  the blog page - http://qrp-club72.blogspot.ru/ also in the
mail "Sputnik" group and "72 Newsletter" bulletin.

don't  forget  to send reports about your Sputnik/Vanguard QSOs/SWLs,
please.  Also  pictures, schemes of your TXs are appreciate to add on
the Sputnik gallery.
Victor UA1CEX operate on the old valves military TX 1 W G5RV on 20 m.
Peter  PA0PJE  informed he QRV on 21 MHz on Sputnik clone TX with two
"rod"  valves.  Also Peter operate on 20 m with Vanguard TX on Ge pnp
AF118 transistors 40 mW.
Sergey RV3DSA informed about his 1960 valves TX made in Germany
RV3GM  used  50  mW  TX  on  14060  +/-  kHz  (old USSR Ge pnp GT320b
transistors) together with DC RX also on old Ge types transistors (CQ
and RBNs reports so far only).
Sorry,  I  have  not info about Sputnik/Vanguard QSOs for the moment.

Sputnik commemoration days

Every year a few hams come on HF to commemorate the launching of the very first satellite, Sputnik 1.  Many try to use identical valve rigs as used in the original. I came on a few years ago with G6ALB and G4NUA on 15m CW and our QRPp TX  CQ was answered by a stateside station.

I do the same so using my vxo 50 mW a-la "Vanguard" TX on Ge pnp
transistors GT320B (ex USSR type) and my RX is DC on 4 Ge pnp
transistors (two diodes mixer by RA3AAE Vlad Poliakov). So even my
QRPppp TX blocked receiver and I can't to check my TX frequency
exactly. Therefore after my CQ I tune RX some kHz around of 14060
looking for reply. So, don't worry to be out of zero-beat calling me.
Usually I QRV in the QRP "rendezvous" Tuesdays and Thursdays at 9.00
UTC at 14060 +/- Each QSO appreciate for my milliwatts!

Dear Friends,

just  inform  you about Sputnik activity days in October 4 to 18. See
details at the Club 72 web - www.club72.su - "Sputnik Days" in menu.
Three categories:
- Sputniks - TX with old type valves (1950'th preferably), ID is series
of beep-beep-beep... in transmission
-  Vanguard  -  TX on old Ge transistors (pnp 50'th preferably), ID is
series of "V" in transmission
- SWL - copy Sputniks and Vanguards CQs or QSOs
All  operators may take a part in 2 or 3 categories at once (separate
reports/logs).
Remind  the  output  power  of  the  1'st  Sputnik was 0,7 watts, but
Vanguard's TX was only 10 mW. I strongly recommend to limit power less
than  1 watt for Sputnik category and less than 100 mW for Vanguards.
That's not contest. Just for fun!
There  are  audio  of  Sputnik-1  and  Vanguard-1 beacons on the page
Sputnik Days. Enjoy milliwatting, homebrewing, Space radio spirit.

Crossing the Atlantic again with Sputnik TX

My CQ call today on 21.060MHz (using G6ALB's 400mW Sputnik valve TX) resulted in a reply from Jim W1PID who was 549 initially but he faded out before I copied my report.

Sputnik valve TXs on air this week

All being well, for a few days starting October 4th I shall be on 21.060kHz using G6ALB's "Sputnik" valve TX which puts out 400mW. Several other stations around the world will be running similar rigs and with luck we will manage a few Sputnik-Sputnik QSOs. DL2BQD will certainly be on and also, with luck, some transatlantic propagation will be possible.

Sputnik across the Atlantic today

The "team" today
This afternoon Andrew G6ALB, Ted G4NUA and I got together to finish building the "Sputnik" transmitter for 15m based on old Russian valves of the same type used in the first Sputnik satellite in 1957. These were given to us by AA1TJ. Andrew G6ALB did all the building work but I was the "air tester" as his CW is, he says, worse even than mine.

After a few false starts with the PSU arrangement we fired up the transmitter into Andrew's inverted-L antenna and had almost immediate success with a QSO (following our CQ) with K1GDH (Ed) near Cambridge USA who was running 5W and gave us 539.

From Andrew:
Our power out was 400mW.  PSU was nominal 24V AC @ 500 mA plug top followed by doubler for about 74V no load and 72 on load.  Grid Block keying uses -36V rail.  In all 3 diodes, 3 caps, 3 bleed Rs.  Very simple, fairly safe also. Filament supply is 5V DC plugtop [stabilised] and 18R resistor which gets warm!
A second Sputnik rig is being built now and all being well we will be on the air on Oct 4th (Sputnik Day) to try for some more QSOs.

Sputnik valve TX tests

This afternoon G6ALB and I got together to build a 2 valve 21MHz transmitter using a couple of Russian valves of the same types used in the original Sputnik 1 satellite in 1957. Surprisingly I've never built a valve transmitter before. Even today, Andrew did most of the building. My input was to wind a toroid and to help sort out the wire ends of the two valves. The valves were kindly supplied by Mike AA1TJ.  The breadboarded TX is shown in the picture. On a test this evening over the 3km path between our QTHs the 400mW TX was copied fine on my IC703 and 10m halo antenna.  Even at the lowest HT voltage (around 30V) his signal was still solid copy on the "Sputnik". Our aim is to have a pair of these units ready for Sputnik Day (Oct 4th) and to work each other and other more distant stations who are using similar rigs.  See also http://aa1tj.blogspot.com/2011/07/sputnik-qso-party-transmitter-prototype.html
