In the end, if you are choosing between these two transceivers, it will be a personal decision based on the way you operate.
Another factor is price with the IC705 considerably less expensive than the FTX-1 in the UK. In this video, both are compared. The IC-705 has more features built in.
Personally, I would not pay the extra for the FTX-1. If it was the same price as the IC-705 it might be a harder decision!

I had a IC-705 when they first came out and then sold on awhile ago.
Then I recently purchased the FTX-1, reading the specs I felt this gave me more than the 705 ie better battery, Two antenna ports, dual receive, APRS, 70MHz, newer designed receiver and the option to add the amplifier if needed.
Having owned this FTX-1 for over a month, I just can't warm to it for some reason. The menu is quite confusing, sometimes when tuning it can glitch and the dial display has to catch up, lowest power setting is 0.5w, Think it needs a few firmware updates to get it spot on.
I'm really considering trying to swap it for IC-705 as its just not for me and miss some of the funtions on the 705. Plus the waterfall is better on the 705 even the FTX-1 is cleaner.
So yes! depends on what you want from a radio, as the FTX-1 will suit people
