Yaesu FT-710 FT8 - last try!

Having tried most things, I shall give my FT-710AESS one more try on FT8.

So far, everything I have tried has failed. If it is something I am doing wrong, I have yet to find out what it is! All the drivers are installed, port selection is correct, port properties are correct, rig selection is correct, RTS is selected (as they say), but still CAT fails to work.

If this fails, the rig will have to go back. I really hope I can crack it. It should not be this hard. If the rig is working, I fail to see why this popular mode is so difficult.

If you have one of these rigs, please tell me your FT8 settings both on the transceiver and WSJT-X. I thought mine were all correct, but obviously not.

Thanks Colin. I tried this without luck! I must still be doing something wrong. Waiting for that "eureka" moment when I see the stupid thing I am doing wrong. It is not helped by being so giddy and getting tired very quickly. It is like walking through treacle!

OK Roger,

Two questions I guess this is a yes for this one, but you have the latest general release of WSJT-x as Hamlib had a few fixes for your Yaesu.

The other question is, have you checked/changed the default "CAT-2" speed in the radio, which by default is 4800 bps.

The confusion is, there are comments/setup screenshots with 38400 set in the WSJT-x CAT settings TAB and if the Radio has not been changed to match it will never work.

If you have not changed the default in the Radio try WSJT-x @ 4800

Just another idea as I have had CAT issues over the years. Having Kenwood and Yaesu here which have all have different settings..

Hi Colin

My radio and WSJT-X are set to 38400. I shall try a slower speed tomorrow. Yes,I have the very latest WSJT-X released version. Thanks for your suggestions. I shall get there in the end! 73s Roger G3XBM

Did you try other software to see if it can communicate with the transceiver. E.g. N1MM+ to see if it can read the frequency?

Hi Roger,

Just plugged my FT-710AESS into the PC following M0FXB youtube video. All I done was download the virtual drivers plugged it into my PC. Didn't change and settings with the radio and working first time. Within mintues had two exchanges with Germany and Ireland on 40M

OK Roger,

I see others have suggestions. I had a quick read up Lunchtime @ work. I have seen a couple of points.

1. There was a firmware update to fix a CAT issue where it (CAT-2) kept defaulting back to 4k8

2. In the Win device manager you will see two comm ports for the rig, you need to use the enhanced one which is the type B USB socket (square one)

That's all I have.. wish you luck

Several suggestions - thanks everyone. First thing is to check the firmware is up to date. I think it is, but will check. Then slower CAT speed. If all else fails I shall seek help from MLS. 73s Roger G3XBM

Hi Roger,
My Yaesu (not a 710) has a similar USB setup. The confusion I most typically encounter is the dual COM port system. The single USB cable will have two separate COM ports allocated - one is 'standard' port, the other 'enhanced'. Depending on what ports you already have used on your PC, these might appear as COM1 & COM2, or COM3 & COM4, etc. Out of the box one of these ports will default to 38400, the other one 4800. Ideally you want the 'enhanced' port at 38400 since using the other CAT port requires some menu adjusments. You can use the Device Manager to see which COM port number is the enhanced one, then set this in WSJT-X.

Thanks for every suggestion.

Although I see my firmware needs updating and I have downloaded the zip files, it is unlikely to be tried until later this week as we have grandchildren tomorrow, plus my U3A lecture in Cambridge and a visitor due Thursday for a week. I hope to upgrade the firmware this week and try (again) to get FT-710 and FT8 working together. I am sure it is a CAT issue.
