What receiver and antenna were you using, Roger?
As I recall - it was many years ago - I used my loop and a tuned pre-amp feeding my PC running Spectrum Lab software. Integration time is many hours. There is now way these signals could be heard!
Thanks for the info. I wondered if it was a loop or long - very long! - wire, or even earth probes.
I am hoping to get set up for VLF/ELF reception soon. I have an up-converter covering 5 to 500kHz and a loop which is giving good results down to 10kHz but haven’t got SpectrumLab running yet for the really low stuff.
An up converter will not help with amateur sub-9kHz reception!! Successful reception depends on knowing frequencies very accurately and very narrow channels (sub 1Hz bins) and long integration periods. With up conversion frequency accuracy is just not there. So, go straight from the preamp into the PC.
. The up-converter is just to listen to regular VLF such as MSF and the German and French time signals, plus better performance at 136kHz.
