That is surely very interesting Roger! The exchange of cards certainly adds more credibility to his story. He mistakenly read the date as the '28th of June' which would put it in the middle of sporadic-e season...right near the peak time actually, but the card says the month was 'IV' which is April, which would make the chance of 2m Es much much less.
It's too bad that he waited so long to talk about this and I suspect we will never know but what we do know is that propagation is capable of some unexplainable behavior at times. I often refer to it as 'the magic of radio' as there simply are no reasonable answers to how these things occur.
