DSTAR question

Does anyone know if it is possible to access DSTAR networks using a Windows XP PC just using freely downloadable software? I am a DSTAR novice, as you can tell. It might be useful.

With only downoadable s/w there is no chance since, you mast paid for the AMBE code rights (how is this amateurish I don't know).
The simplier method is using a dv-dongle

But the dongle is almost £200, which I refuse to pay.

Just a complete waste of money, especially with other Codecs (some free) now chasing the backside of D-star. Didn't you know its nick name is "Death" Star?

What also grieves me about the price of D'eath Star hardware, we are talking £500 for the average Dual Band Mobile. After all said and done your only still having a chat to Bill Or Ben. You can now buy a 4 Band (28/50/144/430) FM mobile for just over £200 and do the same! But of course there always will be those who want something a little bit better, a bit above the rest, private chat band or just talking to oneself? If you want a free chat on your PC no hardware well just a Microphone, download a copy of Echolink it does the same thing for nowt!

Yes, the cost is very high because, invludes the AMBE codec fees.
Please, be patient enough (like me) and wait for a true ham codec to arrive hihi

I've no intention of spending any money on DSTAR. If it comes for free fair enough.
