This photo shows Salcombe where I was a child. It was taken 116 years ago. There were fewer trees and houses.

Salcombe - NOT amateur radio
The photo shows a view very much like the view I had from my window at my junior school. It was all taken for granted.
Looking back at my childhood in Salcombe, I had no idea how lucky I was.

Finiteness - NOT amateur radio
Today, my son and 2 of our grandchildren from Kent visited the place where I grew up, Salcombe in Devon, UK. My father and his father lived there over 100 years ago. It was almost like handing over a baton.
It is now their turn to enjoy it, not mine.

Salcombe - NOT amateur radio
This is where I grew up until the age of 10. The photo was taken about 60 years ago when there were fewer boats belonging to visitors.

Salcombe - NOT amateur radio
As a child I grew up in Salcombe.
It was years before I realised that the dappling on the schoolroom ceiling was the sun on the water. We took it all for granted.

Salcombe Devon - NOT amateur radio
As a child, I was brought up in Salcombe, Devon. The video below was filmed in summer 2020. It is a virtual tour in 4K (ultra high definition) through the town. Not much social distancing evident!
2020 was one of the rare years when I did not go back to my roots. Hopefully in 2021 at a time when it is less busy I shall get back there.

Salcombe, Devon, UK - NOT amateur radio
As a child I lived and was brought up in Salcombe, Devon. We took it all for granted, not appreciating just how lucky we were.
I have mentioned before how the light reflected off the water made patterns on the ceiling of the classroom. It was a long time before I realised what it was!
There are several videos on YouTube including these here.

Where I was brought up - NOT amateur radio
As a child I was brought up in Salcombe, Devon (see photo). At the time, I had no idea how lucky I was to live in somewhere so nice. I go back most years.

Salcombe, South Devon, UK - NOT amateur radio
As a young child, I was brought up and lived in Salcombe, Devon. These days it is a playground for rich second home owners. It has been a holiday destination for centuries, although it is still very beautiful, In 1959 my parents sold our terraced house for £1.8k. These now sell for £500-600k to second home owners.

That view - NOT amateur radio
As a young child, growing up by the sea in Salcombe, Devon, I had no idea how lucky I was.
From my classroom, I could see the sea reflecting the sun on the ceiling, although it took me years to realise what this was! Out of the window we could see the estuary and the boats and a view up South Pool Creek (see photo).
We just took it all for granted. As young children we just assumed everybody has something similar. To us, it was the normal.
I remember just before leaving the junior school walking all over town doing some sort of project. Imagine this today! Firstly the school would have to do a risk assessment, then get the parents written permission. It just would not happen!

Salcombe lifeboat - NOT amateur radio
The photo shows the Salcombe lifeboat on station. Years ago the crew had to run on foot to a place called South Sands, about 1.5 miles from the centre of town. Just over a 100 years ago there was a tragedy when the lifeboat overturned and most of the crew were drowned. One of my aunts remembered this as a young child.
Talking about childhood, I recall watching my dad play water polo more or less where the lifeboat is now. As a young child I was brought up in Salcombe, Devon.
Out of season Salcombe is quiet. In the summer it is filled with visitors and boats. The estuary behind the lifeboat is teaming with boats.

Crossing The Bar - NOT amateur radio
This may be morbid, but I very much hope this poem is read at my funeral. As many know, I came from Salcombe, Devon. You may have to click the photo to read the poem.

Salcombe from the air - NOT amateur radio
When I was a child, I grew up in Salcombe, South Devon. These days it is an exclusive, and expensive, yachting centre for the well heeled. Most houses there are too expensive for most local people to afford.
In 1959 we moved 4 miles north to Kingsbridge. Although still a market town, this is also of morphing into a yuppy place.

My dad's house - NOT amateur radio
Salcombe Devon Home |
In 1959 my mum and dad sold our house in Salcombe for £1.9k. It now is for sale for £625k!! No doubt the buyer will be a yuppy banker who will use it for a few weeks a year. Salcombe these days is a very up-market town.
Back then - in fact when I was young - it was a thriving all year around community. These days the wintertime population is a fraction of that in the summer. The main street is almost exclusively posh clothes shops catering for the rich yachters. Already the only bank has closed. To me, it is a society that cannot survive unless it evolves again into a 365/7 community again.

Many times before I have mentioned that I was brought up in Salcombe, Devon. This picture of Salcombe in the sunset was posted on Facebook yesterday by an old colleague who now lives in Dartmouth.

Soar Mill Cove, Devon - NOT amateur radio
This photo was taken 4 years ago in South Devon, UK where I was born. The cliff walk from Hope Cove to Salcombe is perhaps one of the most beautiful in the world, although I am biased!

A lot of fun can be had looking at webcams. The one linked is at Whitestrand, Salcombe, Devon, UK.
UPDATE 30.10.16 1605z. Every time I have tried to connect with this link recently it has failed. I think you have to subscribe to the South Sands Hotel Newsletter to be able to access it. See http://www.southsands.com/ .
