Webcams - NOT amateur radio

There are vast numbers of webcams around the world allowing locked-down people to travel the world virtually. One of these is the webcam of the peregrine falcons at Ely Cathedral in Cambridgeshire, UK.

Bishop's Palace, Ely - NOT amateur radio

Right next to Ely Cathedral is the Bishop's Palace, used as such until the early 1940s. For a while it was a hospital (my dad who was a Pathfinder in Lancasters had his appendix removed here as a precaution). Later it was a Sue Ryder home. Now it is the 6th form centre for the King's School, Ely. It was built in the 1400s.

Ely Cathedral earlier - NOT amateur radio

As it was sunny this morning, we did a walk around Ely. The cathedral is very very old and stands on a hill and can be seen for miles, a bit like Chartres in France. Centuries back the central tower collapsed and they replaced it with the wooden octagon.

Flags are at half mast as the Duke of Edinburgh died last week.  All the flags we saw were at half mast.

Last weekend the university boat race was held at Ely for the first time since 1944.

It is a nice city.

Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

A few days ago we went for a walk around Ely. The cathedral (see photo) was still locked. It is a very fine building.

Kids will be kids - NOT amateur radio

Today we went with some of our grandchildren to Ely. We ate in the Almonry that has been serving food since the 1200s (very old!), went to the cathedral and ended up at Oliver Cromwell's house. Then it hailed and rained heavily!

Winter sun - NOT amateur radio

The photo shows Ely Cathedral in the bright winter sunshine.

We went to the cathedral today to see the "Crowns and Gowns" exhibition. Needless to say, I chose not to go to the exhibition.

Like many high streets there plenty of coffee shops and charity shops and few independent shops left.

Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

We are about 12 miles by road from Ely. Some call the cathedral "the ship of the fens". Ely is a small city built on a hill. The cathedral, like Chartres in France, can be seen for miles around. We have to admit to it being one of our favourites.

Ely - NOT amateur radio

Ely is a pleasant town (actually a city) surrounding its cathedral. We went there yesterday and explored some of its quiet back streets. The photo shows one of these with the cathedral's famous octagon in the background.

Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

We live just a few miles from Ely Cathedral, also known as "the ship of the fens". It is very old indeed.

The original central tower collapsed centuries ago and it was replaced in medieval times by the octagon, which is the magnificent wooden structure that we see today (see photo).

River Ouse, Ely - NOT amateur radio

As I mentioned yesterday, we went for a walk in Ely yesterday. This is a view of the River Ouse which runs through the city. Delightful even on a dull day.

Ely - NOT amateur radio

It was not raining, so we decided to do a walk around Ely this morning. This is a delightful city (as it has a magnificent cathedral) with some lovely walks by the river and up to the cathedral. The first photo shows the view from near the Maltings towards the city. The River Ouse is just behind us.
The second photo shows the cathedral from a nearby meadow.

Cinema - NOT amateur radio

This afternoon we went to the cinema in Ely to see "The Favourite".  It was a good film about Queen Anne in the early 18th century. Actually, not a film I expected to enjoy, but I did.

Early morning mist - NOT amateur radio

Yesterday morning we were up early to travel from Ely to Canterbury by train to see our son and family. There was a mist over the fields and frost on our car window! The photo shows the view from the railway station shortly before our train left. Ely Cathedral looked amazing rising over the mist.

Ely - NOT amateur radio

Today it rained. The weather is so different from a few weeks ago when it was very hot.

This afternoon we went to Ely to Oliver Cromwell's house and to the Almonry Tea Rooms which has been serving refreshments since the 1200s! Thankfully the scones were not that old.

This is my wife and 2 of our grandchildren looking bright on a dull day. In the background is Ely Cathedral.

Ely riverside - NOT amateur radio

As reported a few days ago, we went for a walk by the river in Ely. It was the last time we had any sun. The photo shows the River Ouse into which the River Cam flows.

Stained glass - NOT amateur radio

We visited the Stained Glass Museum in Ely Cathedral yesterday. It was fascinating to see a range of stained glass from the Middle Ages to more recent times.

This stained glass panel was made in 1979 by Paul San Casciani and is his interpretation of hydra tissue taken from an electron photomicrograph.

More Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

A few days ago we went to Ely with one of my wife's college friends. The photo shows Ely Cathedral across the fields in winter. It is stunning at all times of the year.

Ely Cathedral - NOT amateur radio

Today we took one of my wife's friends to Ely, about 12 miles from here. We ate at the nearby Almonry, which is also very old. The photo shows the nave leading down to the famous wooden octagon lantern made of wood. The octagon dates back over 600 years.
