When others are "into" many things, I sit up. One good example is Steve, VE7SL in western Canada. He seems to be keen on many things and reading about what he gets up to is always interesting. He has a keen interest in 630m and lightwaves, both close to my heart. He is "into" lots besides, which is why his blogs are so interesting.

Lightwave Comms
Because of my poor health I have not been able to pursue 481THz (lightwave) experiments especially "over the horizon" NLOS tests. Thankfully, others are "carrying the torch" .

West Coast Canada to Africa on 6m
See http://www.amateurradio.com/ for a report by Steve VE7SL of his 6m exploits. This sounds like Es but on these very long paths I question the conventional theories of multi-hop Es. I wonder if this is some kind of chordal-hop Es? As I reported yesterday, my QRP 6m WSPR was spotted for the 3rd year running in Israel. It could be multi-hop but I have my doubts.
There is also the possibility of mesospheric noctilucent clouds being involved in some very long paths on 6m such as Europe to Japan. This 8000km + path seems to be there most summers. We have much still to learn.

VE7SL's new blog
Take a look at this blog:
Hello Roger - just a note to let you know, and largely due to your inspirational postings over the past few years, I have also started a blog!
http://ve7sl.blogspot.ca/
I'm sure you can identify with today's post as well.
Hopefully I can keep up the publishing pace as you have over the years.... I can see it will be a challenge.
Hopefully you will enjoy mine at least half as much as I enjoy yours :-)

Simple LF/MF QRP transmitter
VE7SL has a neat little LF/MF TX circuit on his website which is suitable for QRP 136 or 500kHz operation. Its original application was for 160-190kHz part 15 "lowfer" beacons in the USA. I used the same PA arrangement in my first 500kHz transverter and I can confirm it is very reliable and robust.
