Cambridge bookshops - NOT amateur radio

When I first came to Cambridge in 1970 there were loads of bookshops and it seemed a sleepy academic town. 

Many people nowadays prefer to buy their books online, so there are fewer bookshops left. 

The photo shows one that is still around although it would not surprise me if much of its business is now online. Many of the books they sell are secondhand.

We live near Cambridge which used to have lots of bookshops when I first came in 1970.  These days most people buy books online: these are usually less expensive as there is no need to have a physical shop. Habits are changing and most of us are guilty. 

I miss just thumbing through a book, then deciding whether to buy or not. Bookshops must be struggling, like most retailers.

Many second hand book shops have turned to online.

When I first came to Cambridge about 50 years ago, there were far more bookshops than now. The biggest was Heffers with several shops scattered across the town. Heffers is now owned by Blackwells of Oxford I think.

I guess many people buy their books on the internet instead (in the main, I do), although browsing through books is still a pleasure. In 20 years' time what will we do?

There are still a few independent second-hand bookshops around. One of these is David's shown in the photo. This has remained much the same over 50 years.
