Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

We have had amaryllis plants in flower all the time from November and we still have some still to flower!

My wife made this collage.

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

The first amaryllis plant of this group has just come into flower.

We had one much earlier that grew very tall.

They are great fun.

We have several amaryllis plants on the point of flowering.

We put a new one out yesterday (front right) that looks like it has buds.

We have several amaryllis plants on the go.

This one looks on the point of coming out within the next week. They are great fun.

Tangerine Dreams - NOT amateur radio

Despite being re-potted and staked our very tall amaryliss decided to fall over again in the night, so we put it in the sink of the utility room weighed down with.......tangerines!

Since this it has not (yet) fallen over.

Oops - NOT amateur radio

Our amaryllis toppled over as it was too tall!

I am sure my wife will be able to rescue it and add a stake.

UPDATE 1545z:  All fine again. Rescued!

Amaryliss - NOT amateur radio

We enjoy growing these house plants from bulbs at this time of year.

We try to stagger them so they flower at different times.

The first (shown in the photo) is now in flower and looks great.

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

These are fun plants to grow at this time of year.

They start as bulbs, but can grow very big with lovely, large flowers after about 6 weeks.

You are left wondering how such huge flowers and stalks can come from that bulb!

We grow several each year, slightly staggered so they are not out at the same time.

Often, if the leaves are left to dry and die, they are good for more than one season.

Our amaryllis plants - NOT amateur radio

Over the dreary winter months these help to brighten things up. Even better with a blue sky!

We like watching these growing at this time of year. We have several in various stages with one that has 3 flowers (see photo).

As mentioned a few days ago, we have 3 of these on the go. This one is in flower.

They are magnificent house plants and great fun.

This one will be past its best next week, but the second one is coming out!

Triffid? - NOT amateur radio

At this time of year (dull January) we get great pleasure seeing amaryllis grow from bulbs to huge plants with splendid flowers.

Amaryllis at last - NOT amateur radio

We love watching these amazing plants grow in pots during the winter. A bulb grows into an enormous plant with huge flowers. We thought this one was a dud that was never going to grow. In the last few days it has started. Usually they take about 4-7 weeks to fully mature. Each morning they seem to have grown!

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

Every winter, we plant amaryllis bulbs. Most come out, although occasionally we just get leaves. This year, we have a very tall one. In a few days it will be past its best, but it has been fun to watch. They shoot up very fast!

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

We usually have a couple of these on the go at this time of year. They grow from bulbs at a tremendous rate. It is great fun seeing them shoot up and flower. Later we put them outside and sometimes they flower again in the next winter. This one is very tall and fell over! We have now added some more soil and stakes, hoping it will stay upright.

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

At the moment, we have 2 of these plants in flower. The more correct name is hippeastrum, but as I have always called them amaryliss I am unlikely to change now!

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

Every winter, we have amaryllis plants around. These are magical plants: it is hard to believe that from such a small bulb such enormous flowers can grow. We usually have a few and enjoy them shooting up. With luck, they can flower again too.

If you have never tried these, you are in for a treat! We take great pleasure watching ours grow. Next winter get some, water and watch!

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

Some time ago our French daughter-in-law gave us a bulb. We planted it in the garden and forgot about it.

Today it is in full flower and looking splendid. It was recently moved onto our patio by a friend (Richard) who looked after some plants when we were on holiday. According to the RHS website we have been using the wrong name! These are magical plants with huge flowers. You can almost see them growing.

This year all our amaryllis flowers are white. Two were bought by our sons.

They all give us great pleasure.

Amaryllis - NOT amateur radio

Every winter we enjoy seeing amaryllis plants growing. You pop the bulb in some soil and compost and watch it grow at a phenomenal rate. Each morning it seems to have grown even bigger! Once it starts you can practically see it grow. The flowers are very large.

Usually they are over in about 6 weeks. Sometimes they flower again later in the year. This year, most of ours are white, a colour we have not had before.
