Political correctness? - NOT amateur radio

Now, let me start by saying all people of whatever colour or religion have equal worth in my book.  I have many friends of all colours and religions.

However, I was appalled that the head of the FA, Greg Clarke, felt compelled to resign when he referred to "people of colour" as "coloured" if I recall correctly.

This reminds me of the BBC sacking Carol Thatcher some years ago because she said someone looked like a gollywog. Years ago we innocently collected gollies on jam jars and really looked forward to the golly badge.

Personally I think we have all gone PC mad!!  Soon we will be afraid to say anything in case we offend someone or get sacked.

  1. Don’t know if you’re aware of the outcry here in Lincoln regarding the memorial plaque to Guy Gibson’s pet dog at RAF Scampton.

Scampton was the airfield from which the Lancasters of 617 Squadron left to bomb the Ruhr valley dams - the Dambusters - during WW2. The squadron was commanded by Guy Gibson who had a pet black Labrador dog by the name of Ni**er ( I’m sure you can fill in the name). The dog was hit and killed by a car just before the raid, so Gibson chose its name as the password to be transmitted if the raid was successful.

A plaque has been in place at Scampton since that time to mark the dog’s grave, of course bearing the dog’s name. However, earlier this year the RAF bowed to political-correctness pressure and changed the plaque from the original showing the name “Ni**er” to a new one with an image of a black Labrador dog in its place.

The same “problem” has affected plans for a new Dambusters film - what to call the dog because its name is an integral part of the story. As far as I am aware, the solution recommended was to use the name “Nipper” since it sounds close to the original.
