Most of my operating is QRP, mostly 2.5W and occasionally 5W. On 472kHz my transverter produces 12W for an ERP of 10mW. Although I currently use an old linear PSU, perhaps I should use a battery pack with a charger to use when the pack is not connected to the rigs. Mains borne noise is likely to be less of a problem. I'd be interested to hear your views.
Common mode noise was a problem with simple receivers too. Using batteries where possible should reduce mains borne interference. However, if the batteries are trickle charged or pulse charged, this may be another source of noise. I would be tempted to try batteries anyway, with solar charging and try to filter the DC feed to the rig. Sources of noise in this case would be the charging feed and noise induced in to the wires from RF, car electrical systems etc. I would try using twisted pair for the DC feeds in order to provide some cancelling effect.
ReplyDeleteDefinitely try it. I was surprised at the noise level drop when I tried it.
