PA0RDT mini-whip
Several people use this very compact antenna on LF and MF for RX. It is an active antenna for receive only. I am thinking of buying one. There was an interesting article on http://www.amateurradio.com/ about optimum height mounting.

As a general rule for e-probe antennas the higher the better.
The connecting cable forms part of the antenna, and the signal level is dependent upon the height above ground.
The key aspect when using e-probe antennas such as the PA0RDT design is to ensure that noise is not picked up by the connecting cable. The best way to do this is to place an effective common mode choke at the base of the antenna, connect the antenna side of the choke to a ground spike and bury the coax run from the choke to the radio.
