Internet data usage measurement?
Although my ISP doesn't appear to set limits on the amount of data I download, can anyone tell me how I can measure the amount of data I am actually downloading each day or each week?
With any luck your router should have byte counters for sent and received. These figures should be available via SNMP so you could run something like MRTG to display it.
You might need to enable SNMP on your router to get this to work.
If your router doesn't support traffic metrics or SNMP, you might want to see if it's supported by DD-WRT (replacement router firmware which does support those items).
If you do decide to try different firmware, be cautious and read the directions fully -- its fairly easy to brick your router. That said, I've installed DD-WRT many times, with no bricks.
Thanks folks but can someone speak to me in plain English please? I haven't a clue what these terms mean. Surely there must be a freeware program I just run on my PC?
Roger, is your PC running Windows or Linux? Also, depending on your Win version, you might need a different piece of software. Try Net Meter or Network Meter, or do a search for a freeware that is supported on your PC using those keywords.
