Last night on 472kHz WSPR RX

This may be my last outing on 472kHz WSPR RX this season. Last night just 4 unique stations were copied, suggesting most have now gone QRT on the band until the autumn. I may join them!

End of season on 472kHz?

Last night I was on 472kHz WSPR RX. Only 3 different stations were received, whereas earlier in the year I copied 12-15 different stations in the same sort of period and with the same gear and antenna. My conclusion is the "season" is ending and there are now fewer stations active. I guess many will return later in the year.

472kHz WSPR RX

After a very disappointing day on 10m (28MHz) FT8 in which just a single G was spotted, I have now moved to MF RX. The shack PC is on battery power which should be good until early morning with a nice quiet noise floor.

As yet, no spots, even after 20 minutes. I am beginning to think some of the regulars have gone QRT until the autumn.

UPDATE 2102z: Just a single spot of PA3ABK (306km) so far this evening. At least the gear is working!

UPDATE 2124z: Now DK2DB (685km) spotted.

472kHz

Later this evening, I'll probably try 472kHz WSPR RX again.

Before next season I really ought to improve my antenna and RX sensitivity. My antennas are basically poor at MF and I know I can do so much better.

My major problem is I need physical help these days as I am not as fit as I once was. But, as they say in Yorkshire, " mustn't grumble".  😊

630m WSPR RX

As there was clearly no "real" DX on 10m FT8, I have now moved to MF WSPR RX. So far this evening, 3 uniques: 1 Spanish and 2 Norwegians.

UPDATE 2101z: Now 8 uniques spotted.

30 Mar 2018

QSY to 472kHz WSPR RX

About 10 minutes ago I went QRT on 28MHz and QSYed to 472kHz WSPR RX. As yet, nothing spotted.

UPDATE 2050z: 6 uniques on this band so far this evening. I shall stay on until bedtime. Still using the earth-electrode "antenna".

Return to 472kHz WSPR RX

After a day on 10m FT8 RX I have now returned to 630m (472kHz) WSPR RX. On 10m I also spotted an OZ early afternoon that did not get uploaded to PSKreporter.

So far, G4GIR, G8GPO and DH5RAE (995km) spotted on 472kHz WSPR this evening.

UPDATE 2106z:  6 uniques with best DX LA2XPA (1310km).

23 Mar 2018

472kHz WSPR RX

For about an hour now, I have been on 472kHz WSPR RX.  So far 6 unique stations spotted with best DX EA3AER (1142km).

UPDATE 2218z: So far this evening 8 unique stations spotted on 472kHz WSPR using the earth-electrode "antenna".

Overnight on 472kHz WSPR

Last night, I stayed on 472kHz WSPR RX until the battery in the shack PC "died". This happened a little after 0310z. No new stations were spotted after I went to bed. In all, 12 unique stations were spotted using the earth-electrode "antenna" in the ground.

20 Mar 2018

472kHz WSPR RX

For the last hour I have been charging the shack PC's battery, so that I can operate on PC battery power this evening. Unbeknown, I had the 472kHz RX connected, even though the noise floor would have been high. Remarkably, 5 unique stations were spotted with the best DX LA2XPA (1310km). I am now operating on battery power with a lower noise floor for the rest of the evening.

UPDATE 2306z: 12 uniques so far. I'll leave things running until the PC battery dies, which should be about 0300z. I doubt I'll spot much more though.

472kHz (630m) WSPR last evening

Until bedtime, I was monitoring 472kHz WSPR RX.  In all, 14 uniques spotted, although no new stations that I'd not spotted before. Once again, I was using my earth-electrode "antenna" in the ground.

Daytime 472kHz

For about 20 minutes now, I have been on 472kHz WSPR RX in the daylight. So far just several spots of G8GPO (36km) and one of  PA3ABK (306km).

UPDATE 1944z: LA2XPA (1340km) is the best DX spotted so far. 8 uniques so far today.

472kHz WSPR RX last night

Yesterday evening I was on 630m (472kHz) WSPR RX. In all, 9 unique stations spotted, although I went QRT at bedtime and did not look overnight.

630m (472kHz) WSPR RX

A few minutes ago I went QRT on 2m FT8 RX and switched to 630m WSPR RX. To be honest, I now know what 2m FT8 can do and I need a new challenge!

UPDATE 1920z: So far this evening 6 uniques with best DX spotted here HF7A (1294km).

UPDATE 2008z: Now 9 uniques spotted.

16 Mar 2018

472kHz WSPR RX

For about 90 minutes I have been on 472kHz (630m) WSPR RX. So far 8 uniques spotted in 5 countries with best DX EA5DOM (1525km). This is pretty average.
UPDATE 2235z: So far 13 uniques spotted on 472kHz WSPR.

13 Mar 2018

472kHz WSPR RX

For about an hour, I have been on 472kHz WSPR RX. Best DX is EA5DOM (1525km).

UPDATE 2255z: About to go QRT. 10 uniques spotted this evening on 472kHz WSPR.

11 Mar 2018

472kHz WSPR RX

For a while now, I have been on 472kHz WSPR RX.  Best DX is LA2XPA (1310km) with 10 unique stations spotted so far.

UPDATE 2220z:   Now 11 uniques.

Antarctica on 630m WSPR

This from Stefan DK7FC this evening:

"Hi MF,
Since a few weeks the German Antarctic research station Neumayer III  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neumayer-Station_III) is running a Red Pitaya on a wideband RX antenna to receive/decode/upload WSPR reports on up to 8 bands simultaneously. You may have noticed them already on the WSPR map on other bands. I saw regular spots on 160m from DL statations and other countries in EU.

They seem to have quite a good satellite internet connection. So uploading WSPR spots is no problem. They also run an up to date webcam showing an image for example here:
https://www.qrz.com/db/dp0gvn

One of the maintainers of the radio station there is Felix / DL5XL. I know him personally and, taking the idea of EA5DOM, i contacted him and asked if they want to try to receive on 630m as well. Yesterday i got an answer.

DP0GVN in IB59UH will receive WSPR(2) on 630m daily between 4...7 UTC now.

I asked them if they can extend the time to 20...07 UTC. Let's see.

So turn on your PAs and make a first contact from your continent to Antarctica on 630m! And spread the message into other reflectors, VK could be in a favorite position.

73, Stefan"

472kHz WSPR RX

After a break of a few days, I am monitoring 472kHz WSPR RX. If things go to previous form I'll spot most stations in the next few hours and they'll all be EU stations I've spotted before!

UPDATE 1952z: 3 uniques in the first few minutes. Sadly all stations spotted before! Best DX  is F1AFJ (607km).

UPDATE 2129z: 9 uniques so far in 6 countries with best DX 9A3KB (1290km). Just G3KEV also spotted on FT8 earlier in QSO with a German.

UPDATE 2317z: Now 16 uniques. Soon be time to go QRT.

UPDATE 2350z:  Now QRT.

Overnight on 630m WSPR

Overnight was disappointing on MF. In all, 15 unique stations spotted, so no more than I received last evening. Again, all were EU with none from the USA.

I may try a different band tonight for a change.
