It is hard to compare these two as I run 500mW on WSPR and about 5W on FT8 from the IC-705. However FT8 is about 10dB less sensitive than WSPR. My feeling is there is far more activity on FT8 than WSPR. Certainly I get far more spots with FT8.
Starting out, I believe FT8 is better. It also allows 2-way QSOs.

Callsign to callsign, report & 73 - a QSO???
Maybe a contact at a push!! FT8 has mocked the art of communications. Getting to know someone's Name, Location and what they are using.
Remember making friends around the world and meeting back up for chats. Those where the days and I'm not even a G callsign holder
I use these modes as since my 2013 stroke I find using voice modes hard. I do not agree with you that FT8 has mocked the art of communications. However, I can see amateur radio dying out as few can experience the magic of radio as was once possible.
