I turned up at a Vintage Wireless Rally outside Bristol on a Sunday, only to find out it was the week before.
Not a wasted trip, we carried on to Weston-super-Mare for the remainder of the day.
This was before we had a PC. Post PC we could contact the organizers. For confirmation by email. and we found this better than a telephone. conversation.
